Overview of Pompeii and Herculaneum

Pompeii and Herculaneum are both towns which on the 24th of August 79AD was covered in a thick layer of pumice and ash when the volcano known as Mt Vesuvius erupted. The areas of Pompeii and Herculaneum were only rediscovered in 1748, the initial rush of people were there as scavengers, taking the gold and anything else which had any worth, only in 1860 was a systematic attempt used to excavate the area.The towns, before the eruption were thriving. Pompeii had an estimated population of between 10,000 and 20,000 people and was popular for holidaying with the Romans. The area was known for its Maritime trade and was known as a rather cosmopolitain and expensive area to live in. Herculaneum was less populated, with an estimated population of 5,000. Herculaneum was mostly a holidaying spot for the wealthy roman as it had wonderful views of the bay of naples.both these areas were known for their wine production, olive oil production, a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, wool and textile industry and their sea food industry, pompeii's signature dish was a fish sauce known as Garum. These areas were so fertile due to their location in regards to the volcano.
